We believe an all female sport environment is the milieu that maximizes girl’s talents. Educational research shows that generally boys get more “air time” than girls. Boys demand the attention of the teacher and they get it. Girls are raised to be polite and take turns, sometimes allowing the more aggressive boys, who are perceived to have greater skill level, to take over. In many physical activities, girls give up because they feel they are “not good enough”. Many girls are afraid to play with the boys for fear of being hurt, some pretend they’re afraid, worst of all, some play down their skill level so that they won’t appear different from the other girls or run the risk of being labeled a tom boy or jock. Girls we have spoken to about sport involvement, have consistently stated that they feel they “aren’t good enough” to go out for a team at school. It is obvious that the majority of girls are not receiving the foundational skill base they need in order to confidently take part in most sports. A safe, predicable and unthreatening sport learning environment is needed so that they might risk themselves without the intimidation some perceive when boys are present.
3.62% of girls are not considered active enough for optimal health benefits. Without adult female role models, girls are not likely to continue participating in sport, because it’s not something you do when you grow up.
