this is a terrible haul for a 40 hr power hitter. they cosmically FAILED at setting a market for the guy. here you had an epstein protege who got bagged, tagged and sold to the butcher by theo. a clinical masterpiece. dissection. through and through. hoyer ‘knew’ he wanted those guys, and epstein let him jump right into the boat.

my guess is hoyer is either out of the game in 2 years or proven a genius. there is zero room for middle ground here. i’m guessing the former given the variance on ‘spects. and christ, you don’t need to take 19 20 year olds when you’re dealing with a stud hitter. classic bend over by SD.

I know everyone’s infatuated with Gonzalez’s road numbers, but many players just hit better on the road than at home. It’s not as simple as taking the road numbers and multiplying by 2. Also, the AL is a tougher league than the NL, and the AL East has significantly better pitching than the NL West (and there’s no Coors/Case either).

Gonzalez was about a 30 35 HR hitter overall for the Padres, and I’m expecting around the same in Boston. He’s going to cost the Red Sox over $20 million per year to keep,

and they gave up two of their top three prospects. Gonzalez is a 1B who is nowhere close to a monster 1.00 OPS type bat; maybe the Padres could have gotten a better deal, but as an Orioles fan I’m liking the financial/player cost to the Red Sox for this transaction.
