This is a pretty apt metaphor for the PNE production of the Broadway musical Peter Pan.It’s one of those plots you only remember part of, but those parts are so etched in the cultural memory that it’s delightful to see them played out well. When Peter bursts through the window and promises to take the Darling children back to Neverland, it’s hard not to be caught up in the nostalgia. At 62 years old, former Olympic gymnast Cathy Rigby is in extraordinary shape as the titular character. She swoops through the air and climbs around the stage, perching upside down on the banister and flipping around the floor, eliciting oohs and aahs from the crowd.Captain Hook and his pirates, the ticking crocodile, and the lost boys are all just as they always were, versatile grown dancers wearing costumes that recall a children’s game of dress up, highlighting that this is all just a bit of frothy entertainment. This production isn’t as sumptuous as other productions have been in terms of staging, but the dance numbers are still well choreographed and solidly performed. The sound is a little mushy in the cavernous room, but, hey, it’s a chance to see a legendary entertainer do a hallowed classic for free. Nobody’s going to complain. But then comes the b plot where the lost boys antagonize Tiger Lily and her tribe of “Indians” and, like most days at the fair, everything just goes a little too far. When remembering Peter Pan, this section always seems to flee the mind, perhaps because it’s just so problematic. It’s a part of the story that goes all the way back to JM Barrie’s original text, which was written in England in a time when popular representations of North American indigenous peoples vacillated between mystical and comical. The animated Disney adaptation took this sentiment to a horrifying place with a song called What Makes the Red Man Red that would have made Adam Sandler blush. The Broadway version excised the very worst of the Disney version, whittling away some of the most racist jokes over the years and recasting Tiger Lily as less of a rival for Peter’s affections and more of a heroine. But there’s still a lot in the show to leave audiences feeling queasy, particularly in the stereotypically guttural way Tiger Lily speaks and the song Ugg a Wugg, which many directors have chosen not to include at all but remains in this production. And then there are the costumes, which have the same old fashioned quality as all the costumes of the show. In a year when we’ve heard repeated calls from indigenous performers asking people to stop wearing fake head dresses to music festivals, it’s extremely uncomfortable to see a group of non indigenous people dancing around onstage in fake mohawks, feathers and streaks of war paint. And don’t even get me started on Tiger Lily’s leather bikini.Through the entire drum dance sequence, I couldn’t help wondering what First Nations families attending the fair might feel, how they might explain all this to their children, and what kind of impression non indigenous children might get from the show. There are ways that the PNE might address this issue and turn this into an opportunity to foster discussion within families. Maybe they could print up some material that looks at historical representations of First Nations and invite the First Nations community in the area to weigh in. Otherwise, it feels like the show is continuing to perpetuate harmful stereotypes to a new generation.Having a big Broadway production at the heart of the PNE is a great way to introduce young people to the magic of theatre. It’s just a shame that it had happened at the expense of a real part of the community. The NRC re imagines itself, with the help of a bigger budgetThe no longer new president of the National Research Council has just been told by the federal budget to his agency, but it turns out he been doing this for a year and a half.
